Are you looking for an easy dinner recipe to make? If so, look no further—this Shepherd’s Pie is easy and absolutely delicious!
Welcome back to another recipe on MJ Adventures. Today we will suggest you a very comfort recipe which you can prepare for you partner after she or he comes home from her first day at work (in my case for my girlfriend).
What is Shepard’s Pie?
Shepards pie is an English/Irish dish made from mince meat, peas, corn and potatoes that has its origin in the late 1800’s. Traditionally, people make it with lamb, and the name comes from the fact that a shepherd looks after sheep. The pie has two layers: the first is minced meat or lamb mixed with vegetables like corn and peas. The second, top layer consists of mashed potatoes and cheese, which become gratinated when baked, allowing the flavors and textures to meld together in perfect harmony.
The thing about Shepard’s Pie that makes it even greater is that you can make your own version of it by adding whatever seasonings you like and what vegetables you have to make it your very own. In this recipe I have choosen to use the raditional vegetables which are corn and peas. For the recipe you will need 13 ingredients but as mentioned before you can just use what you have to simplify it.
We baked it in this cute little heart shaped oven for we got out of Amazon. We will put the link here if you want to buy it. Link to heart shaped oven form, here.
The Recipe
Servings: 4-5 servings depending on the serving size.
Time to prepare: Around 60 minutes
Time to cook: 20 minutes.
The Ingredients
500g Minced Meat
100g Peas
50g Corn
2 White Onions
1 Carrot
1 tbsp Tomate Paste
200ml Red Wine, dry (optional)
400ml Vegetable Stock (You can us ready stock and dissolve it in water)
4 Potatoes
1 Ehh Yolk
100ml Milk
100g Butter
Nutmeg
Black Pepper
2 Bay Leafs
Salt
Method
- For the minced meat: Cut the onions, and carrot into small cubes and put them in a medium preheated pan. Sauté them until they start caramelizing. Take them out.
- In the same pan, add some olive oil and bring to high heat. Add the minced meat and cook it until it starts to get some color. Add the previously sautéed vegetables and tomato paste, then stir everything together until evenly combined.
- Deglaze the minced meat with the red wine, veggie stock, peas, corn, bay leaves, and salt. Stir together and cook for approximately 30 minutes in medium to low heat until 80% of the water evaporates (disappears).
- For the potato mash: Put the potatoes in the oven whole at 200 degrees Celsius for 40 minutes until they are soft. When they are ready, take them out and cut them in half, and pass them through a sifter with a spoon pressing against the skin of the potato. Once finished, add the butter, milk, egg yolk, nutmeg, salt, and pepper and mix them gently together with a spatula.
- Once everything is ready, layer the minced meat in a baking tray or form and then top it off with the mashed potato. Bake it in the oven for 20 minutes, at 180 degreess. Enjoy!
